Our first introduction to the breed was when we were living in the
South Island in the early 1970’s and at that time we were showing a
German Shepherd. We happened to be at a show in Westport and there
he was…..the magnificent NZ CH el Tazzi Tama with his owner Malcolm
Banks.Tama was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen and from
that day my strongest desire was to have an afghan hound so we
contacted Barbara Skilton of el Tazzi in Australia and she offered
us an 18 month old red bitch, el Tazzi Farajiyah, and Farah arrived
in January 1975. In 1976 we bred Farah to Tama and this was our
first Afghan litter under the “Chakdarra” prefix. She was bred only
once more, in 1977, this time to Banks’ other male, NZ CH Candy vd
Oranje Manege imported from Eta Pauptit in Holland.
In 1989 our interest was turned to a kennel that was producing
afghans with such beautiful breed type and movement…the Khandhu
Kennels of Paul & Pauline Hewitt.
After visiting the Hewitts, we bought a brindle female, Rage, who
became NZ CH Khandhu Lets Party, and Regan, our beautiful blue NZ GR
CH Khandhu Moody Blue. These two afghans became the foundation for
what we have today.
