Deleting spam automatically
This brief tutorial has been written by Roy Britten to
help those with problems configuring their email client to delete spam.
It assumes that you are using Outbreak
Outlook Express as your email client, and XTRA
as your ISP. If you are using another ISP you may need to change the
settings in step 4, and possibly
also step 2.
Instructions
[1] Once Outlook is running, select Tools → Message
Rules
→ Mail…
[2] The New Mail Rule window opens.
In section 1, select the tick box beside Where
the Subject Line contains specific words.
[3] In section 2, select the tick
box beside Delete it.
(Options exist to not delete the email, but to archive it instead. This
is a good approach for those who are concerned about false positives in
the ISP's email scanning. Contact
me if you would like this option and have difficulty working
it out for yourself.)
[4] In section 3, click on contains specific words.
Another window opens.
In the upper box type [SPAM].
[5] Click Add. The lower
box changes to reflect the addition.
[6] Click OK. The window
closes, and the New Mail Rule window is updated to reflect your new
rule.
In section 4 enter a name (it can be anything) for your new rule.
[7] Click OK. The window
closes.
The Message Rules window is updated with your new rule: the
name you chose above is shown.
Ensure that the checkbox beside your new rule is ticked.
Click OK.
You're done! All email marked as spam by XTRA will now be deleted
immediately without you ever seeing it.
Problems?
If you have problems with these instructions, or with the web page
itself, feel free to call or email
me.
Of course, if you're having problems with your email you should
seriously consider changing from Outbreak
Outlook Express to Thunderbird.
